Haisley Updates

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over and school starts in less than two weeks!  I wanted to share some information with you in advance of the Haisley Hello regarding staff assignments and some new and exciting things coming to Haisley this fall.

Popsicles with the Principal (Thursday, 8/25)
Tomorrow is our Popsicles with the Principal event.  I’ll be on the playground from 6:00-7:00 p.m. handing out popsicles and chatting with you.  I hope to see you all there!

Staff and Room Assignments
We are just about finished with staffing assignments for the upcoming year.  We are welcoming some new faces, aside from mine, to the Haisley family.  This year we welcome Judy Knorr as a fifth grade teacher.  Judy comes to us from King Elementary where she is noted for her data-driven instruction and strong instructional practices.  We are so happy to have her join us!  Patty Koutoulas is our new Young 5s teacher.  Patty comes to us from Ann Arbor Open with many years at Mitchell Elementary before that.  She worked for many years in kindergarten and has a wealth of knowledge around the academic and social development of young children.  While welcoming new staff, we say goodbye to Kristin Stoops and wish her the best of luck at her new assignment in middle school. We are in the process of hiring for our open third grade and P.E. positions, and I hope to have an update for you early next week.  Here’s what our staffing currently looks like for this year:

Project Lead The Way (PLTW)
Project Lead The Way is coming to Haisley!  Every elementary school in the Ann Arbor Public Schools will now benefit from this hands-on, minds-on program.

Here’s a little bit about PLTW:
Project Lead The Way is a nonprofit organization that provides transformative learning experiences for K-12 students and teachers across the U.S. Through pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, students learn problem-solving strategies, critical and creative thinking, and how to communicate and collaborate. We are shaping the innovators, creators, and designers of today and tomorrow.

Here’s what you need to know:
Haisley will have PLTW during the first semester of the year.  Our PLTW teacher, Nathan Moger, will be teaching units to grades K-5.  Units vary in length, some lasting two weeks and others lasting five or six weeks.  Mr. Moger will be pushing into classrooms for an hour a day to deliver PLTW curriculum.  Teachers will support and assist in the instruction.  Staff will have PLTW training next week.
Furniture Pilot
Our fifth grade classrooms have been selected to participate in a furniture pilot funded by the district.  Each room will receive all new furniture that is designed to more flexibly allow for collaboration and various grouping structures.  We’re excited to see how the new furniture impacts the classroom!
Haisley Hello - Wednesday, August 31st (6:00-7:30 p.m.)
I am so excited for our first Haisley Hello together!  This is an exciting day when your child receives their classroom designation and gets to meet their teacher for this year!  When you arrive, you’ll pick up your child’s envelope with classroom designations, forms, and other information, at the appropriate grade-level table.  Once your child has their envelope and knows their teacher, they can meet them and chat with them.  It’s a great opportunity to connect with teachers before the first day. The PTO will provide bottled water.

Haisley Website and Blog
Soon, I will have a Haisley blog up and running!  This will be where I’ll post information, updates, etc. for you.  I will get a basic one started, but eventually I will add components on curriculum, the school improvement plan, forms, etc. so that we are all well informed and have a place to go when seeking information.  Hopefully this will be useful/helpful to you!
